Google’s video sharing platform YouTube has 4 billion daily online video views, and roughly one hour of video is now uploaded to YouTube every second, the company announced yesterday.

“For all the hours of video you’re uploading—you’re watching more as well; we’ve now exceeded four billion video views globally every day. That’s up 25 percent in the last eight months and the equivalent of more than half the world’s population watching a video every day, the same number as there are US $1 bills in circulation, the same as number of years since there was water on Mars…it’s a big number, and you’re making it bigger every day,” the YouTube team wrote in a blog post.

The jump in video views comes as Google steps up its efforts to bring out more quality content to the site. In September, YouTube announced that it is planning to launch premium video channels featuring regularly scheduled content on broad themes such as fashion, sports, music etc. Google also launched a new version of YouTube in December, last year, to allow users to discover new videos and share videos with others more easily.
